    Penafirme Convent

The History of the Convent of Penafirme begins in the year of 840 when a hermit monk founded the original monastery near the beach of Porto Novo/Santa Rita. With the advance of the sea and natural erosion, it became necessary to move its location away from the beach, where its ruins remain until today with some of the original facade. In 1755, the earthquake and resulting tsunami destroyed the convent and have made it uninhabitable, forcing the friars to relocate to the new convent in Penafirme, whose construction was completed in 1790.

    Porto Novo

A picturesque bay surrounded by cliffs and enclosed by the Alcabrichel river. It was the “stage” of several historical scenes. One of the most important was the disembarkation of the British troops in 1808, in order to join the Portuguese-British army for the famous Battle of Vimeiro.

Vimeiro thermal facilities (Fonte dos Frades)

The history of this Spa dates back to the 19th century. By 1845, some descriptions noted the existence of two baths next to the source of the waters, on both banks of the River Alcabrichel. The first official description dates from 1867, carried out by Agostinho Vicente Lourenço and later by Charles Lepierre.
